Apple’s AirPods have been insanely popular since their release. For a pair of true wireless headphones, they’re actually good value for money (which is not often said about Apple products). But there’s one thing that seems to fox many people – how do you wear Apple AirPods? Or, more accurately, how do you properly position them?
How to wear Apple AirPods: 4 or 6 o’clock?
There are two popular positions – 4 O’clock, directed towards your mouth, or 6 O’clock, pointing downwards. So, why would it matter?
- The microphone. There is one at the top (used for noise reduction) but the main one is at the bottom of the stalk. So directing it towards your mouth should improve the quality of your voice, as heard by others.
- Comfort. Different people will find different positions the most comfortable.
- Consistency. The AirPods have the same ear moulding as the wired earbuds. And they were designed to point downwards.
- Gravity. The stalk of the AirPods isn’t heavy but they do have a tendency to not want to point forwards for long periods of time.
- Apple. There is no “official line” from Apple on this dilemma. However, Apple’s advertising for the AirPods has shown models wearing them in the 4 O’clock position.
So, how do you position them?
As you can see from the above list, there are pros and cons to each position and I don’t think there is (officially, anyway) a definitive, correct answer. Personally, I favour the 6 O’clock position, which is how they seem to fit naturally within my ear.
Just as long as you don’t wear them like Rudy Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York, you should be fine…
