Have you replaced or just got rid of one of Amazon’s Fire TV devices? Struggling to work out how to remove it from the Alexa app? I was. After swapping mine for a rather splendid Apple TV, I thought it would be easy to do. After all, it is for their other own-branded products. Unfortunately, I was wrong.
How it works for other Amazon devices
If you head into the Alexa app, list your devices and then click into the details for say, an Echo Dot, you’ll see this at the bottom…
Click the “Deregister” option and it will remove the Dot from your account. Simple.
How it works for Fire TV
Well, needless to say, for Fire TV, that deregister option is missing. The same goes if you head to the Alexa website. Instead, you have to do this via your Amazon account.
Time needed: 2 minutes
How to deregister your FireTV device
- View your devices on the Amazon website.
Head to Your Account -> Manage Your Content and Devices. Now select the “Devices” tab.
- Select your FireTV device
A list of your Amazon devices will appear – select the Fire TV icon and a list of all your Fire TV devices will appear. Click on the Fire TV that you wish to deregister.
- Remove the FireTV
Device information will now appear, along with a magic “Deregister” button on the right-hand side. Click on that and follow the prompts to remove the device from your account.
And that’s it! You’ve successfully removed your Fire TV device from the Alexa app, and it only took several more steps than should really be necessary.

Help ! My Alexa Echo will always use my Fire TV’s speakers to answer questions. I have tried everything I can think of to make it use its own speaker and not the Firetv speaker. I even deregistered my Firetv but Alexa still talks through my TV… Can you please tell me how to remedy this ? Thank you ! Joe Troy
