What are the currencies in Apex Legends and how can I earn them?

Apex Legends has various in-game currencies which allow you to purchase items. But what are they all and how do you earn them? I stepped into the arena to find out…

Cash

Not an in-game currency, but it’s important to understand what can be bought with your hard-earned money compared to what can only be bought in-game. In some cases, there’s an overlap. For example, Apex Coins (see the next section) can be bought with real money, or earned in game.

So, with your own notes you can buy game packs (these are a set package of unlockable content, including Legends and various customisation options) and Apex Coins. And that’s about it.

Apex Coins

This is the only currency that can be bought with your cold, hard, cash.

You can use Apex coins to buy Battle Passes, Apex Packs, Store items and some event items too (event and item dependant). Apex Packs are earned during the game too, so coins are not necessarily needed for these.

You can buy coins from your platform’s store of choice (e.g. PlayStation store), where you can get a 10% discount on them if you are also an EA Play member. You can get a month’s membership to EA Play for just £3.99, so if you’re buying a lot of coins (i.e. over £40 worth) it may be worthwhile buying that for a month first.

I found the best priced coins could be found at CDKeys. For example, if you were wanting 2000 coins (and, right now, you get an extra 150, so it’s 2150 coins in total), you’d save £1 off the Xbox store price and £2 off the PlayStation store price. However, you can’t apply an EA Play discount on this, so consider that too.

Legend Tokens

These tokens can be used to buy Legends as well as to re-roll daily challenges (I guess it gives you something to do with them once you have all of the Legends that you want).

You can only get these by levelling up – you get 600 for every level that you progress in the game.

Crafting Metals

Now, these are what you need to unlock cosmetic items. The amount of Crafting Metals required to purchase an item varies based on the item’s rarity.

Common item: 30 Crafting Metals
Rare item: 60 Crafting Metals
Epic item: 400 Crafting Metals
Legendary item: 1200 Crafting Metals

You can get Crafting Metals from Apex Packs, where they’re used to substitute an item that you already have. In this case, the Metals will be worth half the item that they replaced. For example, if they replace a duplicate Epic item, you’ll get 200.

You can also get them from Battle Pass rewards – up to 1200 per season.

Heirloom Shards

Not surprisingly, these are used to buy items from the Heirloom store.

These are occasionally given in Apex Packs (although there’s less than a 1% chance), where you’ll receive 150. Otherwise, there are sometimes collection events where you can gather more.

What’s the easiest way to unlock Legends?

If you want to unlock additional Legends, then you can buy them with either 750 Apex Coins or 12,000 Legend Tokens. You get 600 Legend Tokens every time you rank up, so you can buy a Legend every 20 levels. Alternatively, you can buy one of the game packs – for around £16 you can unlock a Legend along with various customisations too.

But what if I want all the Legends unlocked?

In that case, you can play to level 220 and then you’ll have the tokens that you need 😉

But, seriously, you’ll need the Champion Edition game pack, which gives you 9 extra Legends, which represents all the characters up to Season 7. That leaves 2, which you can buy with coins or Legend Tokens.

What’s the cheapest way to get all the legends?

This is going to be a moving feast but at the time of writing this, and based on the PlayStation platform, the quickest way to unlock all Legends is to purchase the Champion Edition pack from the PlayStation store (which gives you the first 9 Legends) and then buy the remaining 2 legends with Apex Coins bought from CDKeys (and leaves you with 650 leftover Coins too). That works out, for PlayStation, at about £45.98.

For comparison, to get all the Legends with Apex Coins alone would cost you, from CDKeys, £54.98 (again, this is for PlayStation) but this would only get you the Legends and 600 left over Coins – by buying the Champion Edition game pack, you get a number of customisation extras too.
