If you’re used to going to the taskbar menu to open Task Manager, prepare yourself for a bit of a shock: you can no longer do so in Windows 11. With Microsoft’s latest version of Windows, right-clicking the taskbar only brings up a menu to adjust the taskbar settings.
Thankfully, there are plenty of other ways to open Task Manager. Let’s look at a few.
Open Task Manager from the Start icon
If you miss opening Task Manager via the taskbar, then you can use the start icon instead. Simply right-click the Start icon, and choose Task Manager from the menu that appears.
Use Ctrl+Shift+Escape on the keyboard
The long-standing keyboard shortcut to open Task Manager still works in Windows 11. All you need to do is press the Control, Shift and Escape key on your keyboard and Task Manager will open.
Search for Task Manager
You can also search for Task Manager by using the Search icon on the taskbar. Select the icon and then type Task Manager in the search box. Task Manager should now appear under the Best match heading, and you can click on the result to open it.
If the Search icon is not available on the taskbar, then click the Start icon instead and use the search box available in the Start menu.
Use the Run window
The Run window also allows access to the Task manager utility. First, hold down the Windows key and then press R on the keyboard.
The Run windows will now appear. Next, type taskmgr in the Run box and then click OK for Task Manager to open.
Use Ctrl+Alt+Del on your keyboard
When Windows freezes because of an unresponsive program, Task Manager can sometimes help. However, it may not be accessible through any of the methods mentioned above. If that is the case, then pressing the Control, Alt and Delete keys may be the answer.
Once you tap the three keys at the same time, the Windows Security menu should hopefully appear.
Click on the Task Manager option, and Windows should now return you to the Desktop with access to the Task Manager app.
